Tuning In to Turning Out Alright

If you have spent any time around me by now you know I have a fond affection for country music. Here’s a song I heard this morning on the old fashioned car radio. It tells a little story of days gone by that you might recognize depending on which decade you were born. I love it! Growing up south of the Mason Dixon line this song perfectly captures my childhood, most every line and lyric. Comment if any of it rings true for you too. And then let me know if you think you turned out alright.

We were born to mothers who smoked and drank
Our cribs were covered in lead-based paint
No childproof lids
No seatbelts in cars
Rode bikes with no helmets
and still here we are

We got daddy’s belt when we misbehaved
Had three TV channels you got up to change
No video games and no satellite
All we had were friends and they were outside

It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world

School always started the same everyday
the pledge of allegiance, then someone would pray
not every kid made the team when they tried
We got disappointed but that was alright

No bottled water
We’d drink from a garden hose
And every Sunday,
All the stores were closed.

It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world

    Hey Shelley,
I found your blog and I just wanted to comment and say that I am glad you heard Bucky Covington’s hit off his record breaking CD. I remember those days too and he captures them so well. Bucky is a Season 5 American Idol Alumni that made it big. If you haven’t bought Bucky’s CD yet, you will really enjoy it and Bucky as a person is a genuinely good and appreciative guy. His new single It’s Good to Be Us is in the top 40 already and it hasn’t even been release yet. Keep your ears open :)
